Treatment Instructions for Siberian Larch Exterior Cladding
Siberian larch does not require surface treatment for outdoor use, as it can remain decay-free for approximately 50–60 years when installed off the ground. Due to its natural decay resistance, dense and resinous structure, we do not recommend any surface treatment. Left untreated, it will naturally turn silvery-gray from rain and UV exposure within 2–3 years.
Advantages of larch include low maintenance for wall surfaces. Although the initial material cost is higher, the life-cycle cost is lower over time because maintenance painting is unnecessary, compared to treated Nordic spruce cladding.
Optional Gray Aging:
- Larch can be artificially gray-aged using ferrous sulfate (iron vitriol).
- Apply a 1:10 ferrous sulfate–water mixture by brush or spray, two coats.
- Gray color develops with exposure to sunlight, reaching the final shade within 7–14 days.
Note on Painting:
- Paint absorbs poorly and slowly into dense larch.
- Maintenance intervals are significantly shorter than for Nordic spruce.
- For a colored finish with guaranteed maintenance intervals, using spruce instead of larch is recommended.

Storage of Outdoor Products
- Products should be protected from direct sunlight and rain before installation.
- Products should be stored horizontally on a flat surface, in unopened packages, and elevated at least 75 mm from the ground so that air can circulate underneath the stack.
- Sunlight and moisture together can cause boards to start graying in spots even before installation; if this happens, the color will even out after installation.
